She Huo 社火

Hi everyone,

Thank you for subscribing to Wu Fei’s Music Daily. This is the 48th episode  — She Huo 社火。

This recording is featured in my chamber ensemble album YUAN (2008, Tzadik Records) .

Music and poem composed by Wu Fei.
Performed by Percussions Claviers de Lyon (France).
Pipa: Pan Eqing 潘娥青, Guzheng/Voice: Wu Fei.

Written for Guzheng, Pipa, Voice, Marimbas (4), Vibraphones (2), Tom-Toms, Temple Blocks, Tambourine, Triangles, Singing Bowls & Chinese Gongs.
Recorded live in concert at The Forbidden City Concert Hall, Beijing.
Commissioned by Beijing International Festival Chorus.

I learned enormously from working with the best musicians in the world. It was not easy to impress the French about contemporary classical music. France has had some of the most influential artists and composers in the world. I was nervous when I met all the percussionists in Lyon for the first time. They were all the most distinguished alumni of Conservatoire de Lyon, and the ensemble had been running professionally for 22 years by then. I knew I was being examed by them on that trip! Old school ;)

The pipa soloist is Ms. Pan Eqing, the principal chair of China Film Symphony Orchestra at the time.

Hope you enjoy this piece!
