Good morning, afternoon, and evening everyone,
I composed and recorded this new song with voice and on the valiha today. The valiha is a traditional 21-string tube zither from Madagascar (photo below). I want to thank my dear friends Tasha and David for bringing me this beautiful gift from Madagascar to Nashville.
The valiha is made from a species of bamboo and is considered the national instrument of Madagascar. Aside from recreational music, the valiha is also used for ritual music to summon spirits. The way the valiha is played is very different from the guzheng. I am still learning how to hold the instrument comfortably and steadily so I can free my fingers to just focus on playing.
Playing the valiha makes me miss Africa and the Indian Ocean, where I have spent some very happy times. Hope this song brings you peace.
