Imagine being a bee 念周叙

Happy Friday everyone,

Thank you for your generous support to Wu Fei’s Music Daily. This is the #328 episode — Imagine being a bee 念周叙.

I recorded this piece on guzheng yesterday. It is a dedicated to a childhood friend of mine from China. Her name was Zhou Xu 周叙. I called her Xuxu 叙叙. We grew up together for six years from the High School of China Conservatory of Music to the college of the conservatory. We were both composition students. Everyday Xuxu and I spent hours in the practice room working on music during those years. We loved Bartok, Stravinsky and Sofia Gubaidulina. Xuxu passed away seven years ago because of cancer. She would have composed so much more beautiful music. When we were teenagers, I used to sing her songs back to her. That’s how much I loved her music. In 2014, the year she passed away in Beijing, she received her Doctor of Musical Arts from University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Zhou Xu and I in our old dorm room in China Conservatory of Music in Beijing in 1996. We were freshman and were excited to start our college year together after three years in high school. She was the most joyful and kind-hearted friend. She was the most hardworking student in our class with enormous talent.
