Guerrillas' Song

Thank you for subscribing to Wu Fei’s Music Daily. This is the 50th episode —Guerrillas' Song

Happy Father’s Day everyone (this time for real — this was my last tune about Father’s Day a week early!

I recorded it yesterday with my father. He plays the sanxian on this one. Guerrillas' Song 游击队之歌 was a very popular song in China when I was a child. Until yesterday, both my father and I thought it was a Chinese tune. But we found out it is actually an old British military marching song called "The British Grenadiers" dating back to the 17th century.

The Chinese lyrics are below. This version was written in 1937 by He Luting during the Sino-Japanese war era, and popularized by the Communist Party People’s Liberation Army.

Both my father and I are glad that we now know the origin of this song that we’ve enjoyed playing for decades because it is a good tune! We had fun recording it as our father-daughter weekend hang!

Hope you are having a good weekend!

This photo was taken in late October 2009 in my parents’ old apartment in Beijing.
