Good morning everyone,
Thank you for subscribing to Wu Fei’s Music Daily. This is episode #446 — Falling syrup 糖人儿.
This piano piece was composed and recorded yesterday, performed by me. The inspiration is from 糖人— sugar people.
Sugar people is a traditional Chinese form of folk art using hot, liquid sugar to create three-dimensional figures (see photo below).
These fragile, plump figures have a distinct brownish-yellow color. They are mainly for ornamental purposes, not for consumption but you can eat them. Popular figures include animals such as dragons, roosters and pigs, and objects such as machetes and spears.
Traditionally, artists set up their sugar studios in areas such as markets, and outside schools, as the figures appeal to children. These days, this art form is practiced in tourist areas.
There used to be sugar artists selling their eatable paintings in the hutongs of the neighborhood where I grew up in Beijing. That was my occasional dessert.
Hope you are starting a sweet week!
