Hi everyone,

I want to thank the new paid subscribers in the last week! Your support is very much appreciated it!

This new two-track guzheng piece was composed and recorded yesterday. I was inspired by playing with a dear friend - a banjo maser Béla Fleck last week in Nashville where we both call home. It was a rare occasion that we got to just improvise as a duo. Banjo has five strings. In this recording, I played in 5/8, which means that you count 1 2 3 4 5 with the eighth note getting the beat.

Music in the time signature of five is not common in the main stream traditional, classical or pop/folk music. However, in many cultures like in Southeast Asia, Africa, the Balkan, India, the Middle East and Central Asia, you can five a lot. One famous work that is written in 5/4 (the quarter note getting the beat) is the second movement of Tchaikovsky’s 6th symphony aka Pathétique Symphony. It is a waltz, but uses 5/4 to give an asymmetric “1 and 2 and 3, 1 and 2” pattern. Mars from The Planets, by Holst, uses 5/4.

It is a day to balance on fives!
