This three-track night song was created and recorded on guzheng and valiha yesterday, performed by me. The guzheng is a traditional Chinese 21-string zither and valiha is a traditional tune zither from Madagascar.
The photo below is my mother in Beijing in 1973. She was 25 years old and visiting her family briefly. Between 1969-1975, my mother was one of the 17 millions of sent-down youth during China’s Cultural Revolution. Those young people were sent to rural areas to be “re-educated” by peasants as a result of the movement. For six years, she lived in a remote town 2000 miles away from home called Xishuangbanna in the extreme south of Yunnan Province, bordering both Myanmar and Laos. My father saw this photo from a mutual family friend who matched them. He fell in love with her instantly. Two years later, they met in person for the first time when my mother moved back to Beijing for good when the Cultural Revolution ended. The next year, they got married.
