This solo guzheng piece was recorded yesterday, performed by me. Lately, I have been sorting old family photos over the internet with my relatives in Beijing. I come from a big family from my father’s side. Most of my relatives still live there. The Wu family tree goes back to at least six generations in Beijing. Everyone has been very close. As my uncles and aunts getting older, several of them passed away in the past a few years. Since covid, I have felt a sense of urgency to make a record of every family member’s name, how they are related to me, what they did, stories about them etc.. My uncles started sharing old photos they had in my WeChat family group, as well as sharing their memories of their childhood. Most of the photos are my first time seeing them. It is very moving to see my elderly relatives when they were young. Below is a photo of two uncles of mine on the Great Wall in the early 1970s. It was in the middle of the Cultural Revolution. The uncles were first cousins to each other. The younger uncle in the photo was living in Guangzhou visiting the older uncle (died 1990s) in Beijing. The two cities are 1890 km (1175 miles) apart. The trains were very slow back then in China. My uncles must be very happy to see each other.
