This solo guzheng improvisation was recorded yesterday. I was thinking about the people who have been protesting on the streets all over China against the zero Covid lockdown during my thanksgiving weekend in my peaceful west Nashville home.
It has been a heart breaking weekend as I could not ignore what was happening to my birth city and country. As the world has been returning to normal, I have been following closely to the zero covid situation in China. Many of my relatives and friends have been locked down in their homes for weeks, and some for months. Everyone worries about their safety and where the next meal would be now since they can’t see the end of the lockdown. I see sadness, grief, and hopelessness expressed on their social media posts.
Last Friday, there was horrific news: Ten people burned to death in their locked down apartments in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang region in the far northwest of China. Soon after that, people all over China started to walk on the streets to express their utter frustration at the zero covid policy — “We want to eat! We want to work! We want freedom! No more Covid test! Stop lockdown!”
