This three-track counterpoint guzheng piece was composed and recorded yesterday. After two hours of working on the orchestral score of Hello Gold Mountain, I needed a change of brain.
Then I remembered my old composition professor’s home phone number back in Beijing. I used to memorize all my professors’ phone numbers in music pitches. Most of my music lessons at the China Conservatory of Music were one-on-one lessons that required me to call my teachers to schedule. 7 would be B; 5 would be G; 0 would be rest.
Every professor who taught me is remembered as a short melody. My composition professor’s number was a combination of two whole steps + a perfect 5th interval, which is the motive of this piece.
