#538 — Charcoal locket 炭钗锁

This solo guzheng and vocal improvisation was recorded yesterday. The melody I sang was inspired by a song that I’ve loved since I was a child. It is from the TV series —Dream of the Red Chamber 红楼梦 (1987), composed by Wang Liping 王立平 (1941), based on the classic novel.

Prof. Wang spent more than a year to finish composing and orchestrating all the music for the 36-episode TV dram series. The day before yesterday, I saw a beautiful sunset in the forest (photo below). The colors were breathtaking. The entire forest was light orange for 10 minutes during sunset. I had to take a photo. Then, I realized how amazing the trees looked in the photo. They look like an upside down Chinese gold locket that small children traditionally wear as a good luck charm, and that reminded me of a character from the novel Dream of the Red Chamber. Her name is Xue Baochai 薛宝钗, and I remembered a melody from the TV series rose from my chest. That was when I improvised this piece.

If you want a different way to receive and listen to my daily tracks, Substack now has an iPhone app that includes an audio player that makes it very easy to find and listen to my music here. An Android version is also coming, apparently.
