Hi everyone,
This solo guzheng improvisation was recorded yesterday after I took a walk in the forest near my home in Nashville and saw a bunch of cicadas (photo below).
They must be members of Brood XIX, or Brood 19.
In 1898, entomologist Charles Lester Marlatt assigned Roman numerals to 30 different broods of cicadas that come out of hibernation periodically to graze and mate and make a noise. Some do it in 13-year cycles, some in 17-year cycles.
Under Marlatt’s system, 17-year cicada broods were assigned Roman numerals I through XVII (1-17), while 13-year cicada broods were assigned XVIII through XXX (18-30). Brood XIX is a 13-year brood, which is why it has a higher number.
I’d like to share the trailer video of my concert with Shanir Blumenkranz at the Lincoln Center in New York on April 11th, released by Lincoln Center yesterday:
“Wu Fei and Shanir Blumenkranz are virtuosos of their instruments. Together, they create genre-crossing sonic landscapes as a playful duo. We crashed their soundcheck in the Atrium last month to learn more about the guzheng, oud, and gimbri.”
Check it out on Lincoln Center’s Facebook page.
