#1177 — The Nations

Nashville

Good morning, afternoon, and evening,

This solo guzheng piece was recorded today, inspired by the iconic mural on a grain silo in Nashville’s The Nations neighborhood. My family and I lived there after moving from Beijing (2015–2016). I still remember the bare silo, and how I longed to climb inside — to see Nashville through its highest window.

Time moves irreversibly, yet art bends memory. This composition is my time machine. Hope it returns you, too, to a half-forgotten moment you’ve wondered about.

The artist is Australian Guido Van Helten, an internationally acclaimed muralist uses a nearly black and white paint palette, allowing the gritty emotion of his subject to come through. For the Nations, Van Helten chose 91-yr old Lee Estes, known to friends as LD. He has called this neighborhood home since the late 1920s.
