Hi everyone,

It is my pleasure to invite you to the "Creativity and Collaboration in Transnational Chinese Music", part of the Conversation in Creative Practice series organized by the Department of Music, SOAS University of London.

It’s on Tuesday December 5, 2023 at 3-5pm GMT (EST 10am | CST 9am | MST 8am | PST 7am) in Room G52 (SOAS main building). I will be remotely joining composer Yi-Chen Chang on Zoom. We will discuss our latest work, aspects of collaborations, transnational identities, and the future of Chinese music with faculty members at SOAS, Dr. Xiaoshi Wei and Prof. Rachel Harris.

Biographies: 

Yi-Chen Chang is a Taiwanese-born musician whose interests include Western art music, jazz, and musical traditions across Eurasia. Chang has studied in Xinjiang, Seoul and America, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in composition at NEC. She is a long-standing composer for Taiwan's major Chinese Orchestras, and her works have been nominated for and won Taiwan's Golden Melody Award in both Traditional Arts and Pop divisions. 

Wu Fei is a Beijing-born classically trained composer, singer, and guzheng player. She studied composition at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and at Mills College in Oakland, California. She composes for choir, string quartet, chamber ensemble, and Balinese gamelan. She has released several albums, including “Wu Fei and Abigail Washburn”. Her chamber orchestral work “Hello Gold Mountain,” inspired by the stories of Jewish refugees, earned a MAP Fund award in 2018.

“Conversation in Creative Practice” is organized by the Music Department at SOAS University of London once a term, with the aim to invite performers and composers from diverse backgrounds for discussion about their work with SOAS faculty members.
