#830 — The pipes 管风

This three-track guzheng composition was created and recorded yesterday, performed by me. I played around with tone colors again on rapid chord plucking patterns.

Last month, I was in Rouen, France visiting family members. One of the historical landmarks there is the Rouen Cathedral. As I stepped in the big door, someone was playing Bach on a church pipe organ. The sound was so powerful that my arms got goose bumps. My hair felt like it was actually standing up.

My 8-year old child kept asking me where the sound was coming from because he couldn’t see any musician. We were standing right where I took the photo below. I told him that the music was coming out of these pipes. He asked again with a little frustration “But how?” I grabbed his hand and started to look for the musician. It took us a while to find the organist because he was sitting so far away from the pipes.

These pipes were so incredibly loud that wherever we walked to, the music felt like next being played next to our ears. The cathedral was huge. We finally found him. When he finished the piece, my eyes were full of tears. I dream to compose for a pipe organ like this one someday.
