#583 — Departing the lighthouse 灯塔的逝去

This nearly 10-minute solo vocal and guzheng piece as recorded yesterday. After weeks of following the news of the lockdown in China due to the new breakout of covid, especially after a heavy news of my dear friend’s father passing away, my heart had a confrontation with my brain when I sat down to create this recording. I have known this friend since I was sixteen years old in Beijing. She is one of the most talented and beautiful erhu musicians I ever known. I call her jiejie 姐姐 — big sister. She lives in the U.S.. The rest of her family all live in China. They were hoping to reunite this year thinking civid would finally end at some point. When I saw the videos she shared of her father and her playing music together during his first visit in the U.S., I also saw myself and my own father who is living with me with good health. My father is a musician too. There was so much love and joy between my friend and her father playing music together. I couldn’t bear the pain as if I had lost my own father whom I could only remember as a happy music man while playing music even if many tragedies happened to him. Now, I cherish my father more than ever fearing that I will regret one day not taking good care of him when he was alive. But today, my father is preparing another warm and delicious meal for me and his grandchildren as I am writing this post. Thank you for reading it. It has been an emotional day. Hope this piece brings you a moment of peace into your weekend.
