I often think about an idiom "不进则退" (bù jìn zé tuì). It originates from ancient Chinese philosophy and classical texts, reflecting the Confucian and Daoist emphasis on self-cultivation and continuous effort.
One of the origins of the idiom is 《增广贤文》 ("Expanded Maxims") from the Ming-Qing dynasty collection of proverbs includes the line:
"学如逆水行舟，不进则退。"
(Learning is like sailing against the current; if you do not advance, you will retreat.) It compares progress to rowing upstream—without effort, you’ll be pushed backward.
It aligns with Confucian teachings on relentless self-improvement: "日日新", "renew yourself daily". Every small step counts.

Where I come from (at sometime during the last millenium ...) People used to say: "Standing still equals going backwards"; which could be considered a simplified form of Einsteins relativity-theory ... 🤣🤣🤣
Chinese history, philosophy, culture, etc. is so immensely rich in comparison to "the West" ... Some 2000 yr. old and very smart Greek and Roman philosophers still and successfully dominating the stages.
