I recorded this yesterday, August 2, a very special day in our family.
Exactly one year ago, I carried out the biggest mission in life —bringing my parents from Beijing to their new home, Nashville, Tennessee. It was my mom’s first time ever leaving China in her 70 years of life, and both of my parents’ first time coming to the U.S. It took the our family more than two years to prepare the paperwork and several years of emotional processing.
I took the photo below one year ago, when our plane was above Nashville close to landing. I’m proud of my mom and dad. They’ve been living well in Nashville since they arrived. I feel extremely grateful for having them close especially during this difficult time. The strength from having my family together helps me conquer any hurdle in life.
This piece is an ancient classical guzheng piece from Shandong province. It’s about a fisherman rowing his boat going home singing in the sunset after a day of fishing. In Chinese culture, sunset symbolizes one’s late life. This piece is my parents’ favorite guzheng music. I’d like to decide it to them and hope their late life is as beautiful as Nashville’s gorgeous sunset.
