Happy Monday everyone. Hope you’ve had a restful weekend. Yesterday, I tuned my guzheng in D minor. Lately I have been drawn to minor sounding scales. Maybe it’s because the half-sized guzheng I played for more than a month in Auckland was in major scale. I couldn’t change the tuning because I brought the wrong tuning hammer with me from the U.S. to New Zealand. Now I have all the right gears again so I am doing a “major scale cleansing”. It is like craving for certain kind of food after you’ve had one kind for too long. Scales or tune colors are like sonic food to our ears. Our ears need all kinds of nutrients to stay healthy.

This sign is from Rarotonga, Cook Islands. I stood in front of this sign last month wondering why some of us wanted to travel to places that were far away from everywhere. When you get to the destination, all the numbers are just a symbol again like before we start the journey.
