#1241 — A bending story 声声折折, 腔韵韵

Good morning, afternoon, and evening,

In today’s solo guzheng improvisation, I focused on using the traditional bending technique with my left hand. Bending the strings on the left side of the bridges is a signature sound in much of the classic guzheng repertoire. When these bent pitches form melodies, they sounds like many local Chinese dialects to my ears. There are old stories held within the resonance of each bent note.

Soon, I’ll be traveling to Seattle to perform at the Bellevue College International Guitar Series. I’m honored that this concert has been featured by Seattle’s legendary Earshot Jazz (photo below)—especially since I’m the only non-guitarist in this year’s series. That said, guzheng players actually share a lot with guitarists when it comes to plucking the strings. I’ve often found myself deep in nerdy conversations with guitarists around the world about picks, strings, and plucking techniques :)

If you and your friends are in greater Seattle area, hope to see you at my concert on Dec.10 at 7:30pm at the Carlson Theatre in Bellevue College! Details and tickets: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/bcguitarseries/1829326

My music newsletter will resume later this week when I’m back home. Thank you for your support and patience!
